City of Lakes Loppet Run for Snow
a Great Success!
More than 200 participants took part in the
City of Lakes Loppet Run for Snow. Organizer Tony Mommsen
had guessed that there would be 40 runners out for the event.
“I’m flabbergasted with the turnout,”
said Mommsen. “Even with some rain, folks really seemed
into it – obviously the effort to get snowmaking is
important to folks.”
Johanna Winters and Graham Baird were the
overall female and male winners, respectively. Winters finished
in 19:35 and Baird in 17:01 on a very tough and hilly course
that finished near the new Wirth Beach House in Theodore
Wirth Park.
Baird made the cover of the Star Tribune Metro
Section and Channel 11 featured the event on the 10 p.m.
news (complete with one runner diving into the snow in an
effort to pass another runner).
Organizers believe that between registration
fees and contributions the event raised more than $5,000
toward the Wirth Winter Recreation Area fundraising effort.
The first phase of that effort – involving clubs and
teams – is nearly complete. Funds raised to date exceed
$40,000.
